Dan Wheeler is the latest addition to the Red Sox bullpen.
Dan Wheeler is a better signing than Bobby Jenks for the Red Sox. There are less risks with the 33 year old right-hander, and he's been much more consistent over the past three seasons than Jenks. Don't get me wrong though - I do like the potential upside of Jenks, and I hope having him thrust into an environment like Boston can help raise his game while making our back end rotation deadly, I just see too many question marks surrounding him.
Dan Wheeler on the other hand has already proven he can be an affective pitcher in a very difficult AL East. The one thing he has going against him is that he's three years older than Jenks, but his consistency is what doesn't scare me off here. Looking at the below numbers, I took the averages for both pitchers over the past three seasons, and surprisingly, Wheeler is ahead of Jenks in almost every category. The one section you'd expect Jenks to have a large advantage in would be K's - however, Wheeler keeps pace with him there as well. Those numbers would change some if I did K/9, but I don't like to discredit Wheeler's ability to pitch more innings and stay healthy.
Regardless of who you think is the better reliever or signing by the Sox, you can't fault Theo on who he's acquired for us fans to root for - it's now up to the pitchers to prove him right.
