Boston sports teams swept away their games last night as all three teams found themselves in the victory column when all was said and done. It was another deep night of intense sports for Boston as the Bruins won a key elimination Game 6, the Celtics overcame a miracle 14 point fourth quarter deficient, and the Red Sox completed a ninth inning comeback of their own. It seems lately as if every night presents us with a new game and some new drama. Like I stated a few weeks ago, this is a golden age for Boston sports that we're in, and if you were skeptical about that fact, then these last few weeks had to have convinced you otherwise.
In honor of our new Big Three, I present you with three reasons why each team should currently be exciting the hell out of you.
The Boston Bruins
- This team has been cruising on all cylinders this year and they've been beyond fun to watch. Of
all three teams playing right now, the Bruins just deserve it more. They've been in the shadow of the Patriots, Sox, and Celtics for over a decade now, and it very well may be their time to shine. They have that perfect blend of young and old, however it's the young that really excite me. From Kessel to Lucic the Bruins should once again be good for years to come. Speaking of....
- ....Milan Lucic, Jesus, this guy is an absolute beast on skates. He's the type of player that is going to help pull the casual Bruin fan back into the mix for the B's and help make them relevant again. Not only is Lucic the most fearsome fighter in a league full of tough guys, but he has a plethora of skills to back up his wrought iron fists. Quite simply put. I ♥ Milan Lucic.
- The Bruins are now in the midst of pulling a series comeback that only the Red Sox are allowed to make. They were down 3-1 to a pistol hot Carolina Hurricanes team and they've now evened the series bringing yet another Game 7 to be played at the Garden tomorrow night. The Bruins have NEVER come back from a 3-1 deficit, and if this truly is their year, then tomorrow is their night.
The Boston Celtics
- Defending Champs. We've become spoliled as Boston sports fans with Championships this decade, and the "Defending Champ" year has always been an interesting one to watch. The Patriots are the only team to repeat thus far, and all odds are currentlly stacked against the 2009 Celtics from joining them. But to truly cement their legacy as great Celtics they need to win more then one Championship, and trust me, this is something Paul Pierce is fully aware of.
- No Kevin Garnett. Having no KG throughout these playoffs has become a curse and blessing all in one breath. Realistically KG out of the lineup makes us long shots of Kentucky Derby proportions, but the chance is still there, and that's all I need. You then would think losing Leon "My Man" Powe for the season would have been the final blow that would have made the Champs secede and collapse their King on the table, but no, they've dug in deeper, gotten grittier, dirtier, and more determined. Simply put, this has finally exposed the genius of Doc Rivers, and his name should be mentioned in the same sentance as Bill Belichick & Terry Francona.
- The emergence of Rajon Rondo and Glenn "Big Baby" Davis. Everyone assumed that because of
the injuries that it was going to have to be Ray Allen and Paul Pierce who would have to step up, and don't get me wrong, they've more then had their moments. However the true reason why the Celtics are in the situation they're in is because of the maturation of their two young budding stars. But even father then that, we've become a team and you need to look no further the Eddie House or Stephon Marbury for that. After the Game 1 loss to the Magic the Celtics made NO excuses about being tired from the Bulls series, they placed all blame squarely on themselves. After the Magic's Game 6 loss Howard was blaming Van Gundy, and Van Gundy was blaming his players and the Refs, it was disgusting like his mustache, and that right there is the difference between a Champion and a Chump. Excuses.
The Boston Red Sox
- Never Say Die. It seems as if every other night this version of the Red Sox is coming back from behind and winning games. From the big comeback against the Yankees to last nights late inning heroics, this team has no quit in it, and winning games like this goes a long way in the standings come September and October.
- Jason Bay. I've been on the Jason Bay bandwagon since Day One, and was even at his first game
at Fenway Park. Jason has been absolutely clutch for us early on so far and his stark black & white contrast to Manny off of the field (and on it for that manner) is prolific, especially in light to the latest Manny bombshell. Jason seems to represent a whole lot of good in the game, and it's just too damn easy to root for him out there. Everytime he's up I just pray for inside heat, because I know if it's thrown, Jay Bay will spank it like a bratty child.
- Role Players. The Red Sox have one of the best records in MLB and it's not just because of good luck and a high payroll. It's because of players like Hunter Jones, Jonathan Van Every, Justin Masterson, Ramón Ramírez, and more. Dice-K has been out, Youk is now out, Big Papi's about as helpful as a hemorrhoid, and even Pedroia's been missing time. Yeah maybe Jeff Bailey isn't a long term solution, but he's been serviceable, and you need guys like this during the 162 game schedule to stay on top, because excuses, as we know from the Magic, are for losers.
