KG may be out, but we still have Lucic and a plethora of others. (SawxBlog Illustration - D.Hixon)
The twisted and weird sports year of 2009 threw Boston Sports Fans two spitballs yesterday, each one of the brutal variety, and both having a green hue to their luminance. The first came with the dark announcement that Kevin Garnett may possibly miss the entire 2009 NBA Playoffs, which was like a swift punch to an unflexed solar plexus for Celtic Nation. If there ever was a “Worst Case Scenario” situation for the Celtics, this is it. To place a cherry on top of the Celtic’s woes Danny Ainge later went on to suffer a heart attack as Celtic fans were still bobbing in the wake of the KG news. Dark times for sure, but darkest? Not even close.
Does this mean that the title defense and quest for #18 is over? No. Does this mean the Cavs are guaranteed the Eastern Conference Title and an automatic trip to the Finals? No. The games still have to be played, injuries still can happen to other teams, and when push comes to shove, this is still the Boston Celtics we’re talking about, and I have faith they’ll be swinging until their final bell rings, whenever that may be.
Speaking of swinging, I urge you to please start paying attention to the Boston Bruins. This team has been a pleasure to watch all season long, and they seem to be the perfect blend of both young and old, which seems to be the formula to winning a Championship. They’re a brazen bunch of athletes with a distinctly blue collar feel that only a good hockey team can produce. Going to a B’s game is much different then a Sox game, as their bandwagon is not yet at full throat, and the ties and suits don’t find it in vogue to buy prime seats and look at their Blackberry’s. Also, if you haven’t joined the cult of Milan Lucic yet, now is as good as a time then ever to join. This kid is a burning stick of dynamite on skates, ready to explode at any moment. He’s not just your run of the mill goon either, he has some skills, as was evidence with his steal, skate, and pass last night to seal the victory for the Bruins.
What I’m trying to getting at here is this. Shame on you Boston for feeling sorry for yourself yesterday. We’ve had the greatest run any red blooded American sports city could dream of this past decade, and the fun doesn’t seem close to being over yet. We have TWO teams in their respective playoffs that are #1 and #2 seeds rocking the Garden every other night. What more could you want, and how greedy can you be?
We have the Red Sox coming home with renewed hope on the crest of what’s one of the best weekends to live in this city, Patriots Day weekend. On top of that, the Patriots are still a top five team in the NFL (maybe higher), and with a healthy Brady will be even better then their great 11-5 output last year. We are still in the midst of the golden age of Boston Sports, and the ride seems to be accelerating with momentum, not the opposite. I mean the Bruins are now in on the action restoring pride back to a deserving organization. And if you’ve counted the Red Sox out after less then 10 games in a 162 game season I’d like make a few bets with you, because they’re nowhere near the mat, and neither is Boston.
So stop your bitching Boston, get behind your teams, and embrace 2009, it’ll be a year to be remembered. Go B’s. Go C’s. Go Pats. Go Sawx.
