The scary thing about Jon Lester is this, he's only 24. (AP Photo)
As I sit on the T typing on my way to work I have one question for you, the reader. Do you have any question now about Jon Lester being an ace? Last nights performance was just par for the course for Lester as he’s been pitching games like last night all year long. When looking back on the 2008 season Jon Jon was always the rock that held the Red Sox together. Beckett was good but inconsistent, and Dice-K won games but his dominating performances were not a daily occurrence. Lester was the rock, the stability, the ace.
It didn’t matter if he was throwing a no-hitter at Fenway Park or pitching a complete game shut-out in Yankee Stadium, he’s a fearless pitcher who is consistently even keeled and ready to take the ball. It seemed like whenever the Sox needed a win to break up a losing streak Lester was always there to pitch a good game for us, and we may now need him like we needed Beckett last year to advance deep into the playoffs. It was great to allow the rest of the country to witness how special Lester truly is, and his name has to be thrown in there now when talking about being one of the best left handed pitchers in the league.
I stated over and over again the Game 1 of this ALDS was going to be the most important game in this series and I hold firm to that statement. Like that the home filed advantage has been snagged away from the Angels in this ever short five game series. I also boldly predicted a Sox sweep, which I’m still a little hesitant on, but that doesn’t seem so crazy now does it? When I looked at the pitchers on both sides it just never matched up for me, and no offense to their 100 win season, but the Angels are in SUCH a watered down division, and they still scored 80 less runs then the Sox. The only thing they had an advantage on the Sox was the homefield, and like I said that’s gone.
The other great part about last nights win was the total team effort it took to obtain. It started with Lester, then went to Jacoby who made it on-base five times and was a catalyst to our offensive success. Look at that, two home grown players, must make the front office want to pat its own back. Jason Bay’s hit was also clutch as it seems like he just doesn’t miss on bad pitches. And even if that was Lackey’s only bad pitch, this is the playoffs, and everything is amped up another notch, including the competition.
There’s just so much to be happy about last night, and hopefully that means there’s so much to look forward to in the coming weeks (aside from Obama becoming our next president). Man, I sure do love me some October baseball.

Dominating performance by Lester. He was a bit shaky at the start but he always gives masterful sessions.
Loved it...and how about J. Bay-sball!!
derek, just a side note: I know this shouldn't be a place for politics but since you posted an Obama campaign poster on this blog, I was wondering what your thoughts are on the first debate and the upcoming Palin-Biden debate? should be exciting!

Lester is simply amazing. I was so happy for last nights win, although the game was not that exciting, still happy they won.

Shea, no worries talking about the Presidential race, I'd say it's rather important! I try not to touch on politics too much 'cause that's not why people come here, but doesn't hurt everyone in awhile.
I think it's going to be a very good night for Biden and a horror show for Palin. Expect her to say the same 5 things over and over again no matter the question.
Also, Obama was on Mike & Mike this morning and he knows his sports! Was very cool to hear him talk on sports and made him very personable. He even ragged on the the Rays dome a bit! :-)

Go Lester, Go Bay, Go Sox!

I just could not believe that Palin thought she is such an expert of international relations just because her state of Alaska is next to Russia....unbelievable! (Katy Couric's interview)
Biden has always been a scowling, tyrannical, aggitated Senator. I bet his aides will tell him to tone down the "anger" because it'll make the "undecided" voters to somewhat protect her and possibly even feel sorry for her....to the extent that they might even start leaning toward her -- no matter her lack of government/political/international experience.
Anyway, back to baseball.
GO SOX!
