Bart Simpson has the right idea here, or does he? (SawxBlog Illustration)
I read Kevin Cullen's interesting piece yesterday on Boston.com (Enough Already) on what is for better or worst one of the more popular chants throughout New England, "Yankees Suck". We've all seen the "Yankees Suck" t-shirts sold outside of Fenway (I'm more partial to the "Jeter Drinks Wine Coolers" t-shirt because no matter who you root for as a fan, that's pretty damn funny). And if you live in or around Boston you've most definitely have heard the primal chant everywhere from Fenway, The Garden, Gillette, bars, or even backyard BBQ's.
I'll admit, when I first moved to Boston after living 21 years in NY (I was only person from my family not born in Massachusetts) I full heartily jumped in on these chants. I loved them because I hated the Yankees so much, and there just seemed to be something "naughty" about the whole thing. (I apologize for the use of naughty there, and going forward will only use it when saying naughty fresh.) Back then there we still had to deal with all that 1918 bullshit and we were force fed more curse crap then you could shake a stick at. The "Yankees Suck" chant was all we had, and it was a basically a middle finger to the MFNY fans and their arrogant and cocky antics.
Things have changed though. We no longer are controlled by a racist and country club based ownership and we're actually winning games and championships (in case you don't know I think the Yawkey name is a black mark on Boston and think it's ridiculous there's still a street named after him at Fenway). Us as fans are no longer lovable or losers, quite the opposite in fact, and it seems like the only people starting these chants are drunk high school kids from Revere. I no longer participate in the chants because they just seem juvenile to me. I much preferred the steroid chants or throwing dollar bills at Johnny Demon, because again, that's pretty funny stuff.
Do I think the Yankees Suck? Hell yeah. Like I said I hate the freaking Yankees, but do I literally think they suck? No, not at all. I respect Jeter as much as I humanly can, but I still hate him, I mean he's the face of the NYY what do you expect? Where I take offense here is what Yankee fans and other sports fans chant in reference to the Red Sox and even Celtics (no one cares about the Bruins anymore).
Boston Sucks.
Now that has to be one of the more ignorant statements you can make. How do shoot down my entire city just like that? Yankee fans will whine that you can't say they suck because of all the championships their great-granddads got to watch, but they'll discredit our entire city without a thought? Honestly I'd have no problem if they said "Red Sox Suck" because they're Yankee fans and they're supposed to hate us. When we say they suck it's just their team, not their city. This is where I become divided about the whole Yankees Suck thing. I don't like it, but the Boston Sucks chant bother me so much that I want two wrongs to make a right.
Sigh.
Can you tell the Yankees are in town? It's like we once again enter bizzarro baseball world and I just keep typing and typing and typing.... All this aside, I'd be a very happy camper if Big Papi went deep on Joba tonight. Also pay attention to Youk's at bats, they definitely have a feud a brewin'. Oh, and just to rile you up a bit, peep the below video.
This is why the Yankees Suck.

I think I know why Yankees fans chant Boston Sucks!!!
try saying Red Sox Sucks 5 times in a row real fast...
p.s. Arod is a douche

Hah ha! That's hilarious!
Ingenious marketing, Larry Luccino will somehow take credit for that no doubt :-)

Aside from the bars closing early, I'd have to disagree with you there Dan...

C'mon now... Red Sox, Pats, Celtics? Enough already.
"Boston sucks!" ;-)

At least Sox fans can show up and watch a ball game IN THE BLEACHERS no less, without getting their ass kicked and ketchup thrown on their Yanks jerseys. When we say BOSTON sucks... we are referring to the SOX and NE sports fans in general. you hate us because we're arrogant.. we hate you guys because you whined for s many years.. and then you were arrogant to boot instead of using an iota of modesty when you finally won. haha :)
You need two syllables. You know this. RED SOX suck... doesn't flow as good. The S throws it off... so we stick with Boston sucks. And don't throw us all in with the bleacher creatures.. most of those dudes are so blind to what is going on it's laughable... completely biased.. and they actually would take pleasure in seeing a boston fans teeth knocked out. Complete ignorance. I'm sure the Sox bleacher fans are the same breed. It's sad.
Joba won the matchup today... thats what you get for playing the extremo shift on the Giambino! I'm sure tomorrow and Sunday will be interesting.
Joba 4 life.

Great post! and it's true about yawkey, and that we sox fans are not so lovable... but no matter how much self-criticism might be warranted, seeing a bunch of jerks chant 'boston sucks'- even though it makes no sense and i've never even lived in boston proper- really does rile me up.
one point of disagreement, though. i don't respect jeter any more than any other player; while it's true he doesn't get caught up with celebrity affairs or say stupid stuff, neither do most players. and though he hits for high average, he doesn't hit for power and he has below average range at short. good player, undoubtedly, but i don't quite get the aura of reverence that surrounds him.

@ EJ: Come on man, we throw pizza at each other so what's a little katchup?!?

I kid of course.
Same ol' story, there's bad fans and good fans, I like to think we're the good variety.
PS - I think Manny has finally pulled one too many for me...

The red sox SUCK. The yankees kick their ass every time they play. how else do you explain the yankees 26 world series rings and the redsox only having 7. Boston had the 4 B curse, Babe ruth, Buckey dent, Bill Buckner, Aronn Boone. Come talk to me when you have 26. And it will not be 86 years until our next ring.

"You need two syllables. You know this. RED SOX suck... doesn't flow as good. The S throws it off... so we stick with Boston sucks"
Smartass, Red Sox is 2 syllables and ends in an S sound... just like "Yankees". Only that fits better in the sentence "... sucks", you know why? Because the Yankees Suck!

Red Sox fans can talk once they've won 27 world series titles
Posted by: NYY | April 22, 2011 at 04:45 PM
Yankee fans are too retarded to say red sox suck. Too many syllables. All those S's in a row scare them.
I have no respect for Jeter. He will outed teh steroid user he is eventually.
FYI ALL cities use the Yankees suck chant. Not just Boston. Check out youtube.
People hate NY because they think they are the center of the Universe. Every NY player. Every NY politician. Every NY resident.
I can prove NYers are ignorant. Especially Yankee people. Even when they lose they still play a song talking about how they are the best. Only a complete idiot would do that. Yep That would be people from NY.

By the way the Celtics are the team no one cares about. Even before the Bruins won the SC no one cared about the Celtics until they won. Band wagon losers. Ignorant idiots like Paul Pierce makes the Celtics a joke.
