Big Papi takes a crack at a pitch in LA - (AP Photo)
I have to admit, it's a little weird to make the category on this blog post underneath the spring training category after I've already made a few posts under the regular season category, but such is the beginning of the Red Sox 2008 season. The Red Sox lost to the Joe Torre led Dodgers 3-1 yesterday as they got another solid look at Bartolo Colon.
Bartolo was very solid as he went four strong innings giving up only one run while striking out four and walking only one. Bartolo and all his beautiful girth may end up being the signing of the season for the Sox much like Hideki Okajima was last year. With Schilling being out for the whole season (yes I have no hope in him coming back) and the general fragility of pitchers in the modern game, there's no reason to not like this signing, especially for the price.
We still have a few more days until "real" baseball starts again, however this was a great sign for the Sox.
Oh yeah, once again Boston's the most expensive city in the world to watch a ballgame. A product of success I guess, but sheesh, $50 a pop?

you said "girth"...ha

I agree - Bartolo Colon may be a tremendous secret weapon for the Sox if he keeps this up. We certainly could use a solid replacement for Schilling (no pun intended).
I'm not excited about how Papelbon has looked lately, but I expect he'll be fine. He's probably working on his new slider. If it doesn't work well, we won't see it too much during the season.

Yeah I've tried to kind of stay away from my Paps comments, hoping it's all been an aberration, we'll see I guess.
