Hopefully we see Drew doing a lot of this in '08. (MLB Photo)
The Boston Red Sox are now less then 24 hours away from starting their World Series title defense against the Oakland Athletics in Japan, and I can't wait. The Sox much touted Japan trip has seemed to be going fairly well on all fronts, and finally, the wait and hype of spring training will finally be over...well, sort of.
I find it rather strange that after the two real games against Oakland in Japan the Sox then have three exhibition games in L.A. before once again playing the A's in their home opener on April Fools Day. This has been talked about to exhaustive lengths, however it's undeniable that this road trip has to adversely effect the Sox in some way. There's always so much written about the Sox traditional West Coast trip after the All-Star game, and well, this west coast trip is so far in the west that it's now in the far East. This is leaving the Sox far away from home for an extended period of time which is making them a sort of gypsy baseball team, which just has to put the players in a different mindset.
I could honestly care less about all that right now though, and the players and team are all professionals in the end. I'm just excited to finally see some games that count, and I'm really excited to see the Sox play in Japan. I just think there's something fun about seeing them play in an environment like they will be, and I have to admit, despite all the negatives of the Sox "going global", it's pretty cool to see all this happen.
Like many of you, I took tomorrow off from work so that I could watch the opening game. And it'll be especially fun because my Dad is coming down from upstate New York for the first few games, and watching games with my Dad is always special thing. It'll most definitely be interesting waking up at 5:30am, and the coffee will have to be brewed extra strong, but it's still Opening Day, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Welp, didn't take the day off, but I am up and rarin to go. I'm not sure what the Sox will do this year - asking for another pennant seems just plain greedy - but I can't wait to spend another season with this team. They're simply the most enjoyable team in baseball.
One other thing - it feels weird to be drinking beer at 6am. But I think I could get used to it.

Hey Dog, it's 5:00pm somewhere in the world right! :-)
Very excited for the season too, I may have to join you for an inagurial beer, it's the Sox right? lol.
Cheers, and here's to '08.
