Great news coming from down south as it looks like the Boston Red Sox have come to terms to an extension on Terry Francona's contract which will last through the year 2011 with options for 2012 & 2013. All Red Sox fans have to be ecstatic about this because as we've seen over the years, managing the Red Sox is no easy task, and it's a job that garners a lot of attention from both the media and fans alike.
Believe it or not, Tito does have his detractors (God knows why....), however I can't imagine a more perfect manager for this ownership, management, players, or fans. Francona seems to have an uncanny ability to balance it all without making any side feel threatened. He has the old school baseball smarts you only gain from being around the game an entire lifetime, however he also listens to the "stat geeks" in the front office and the results on the field have been showing.
Here's a very short list of accomplishments in Francona's four years in Boston that speak volumes:
- Two World Series Championships
- 8-0 record in the World Series
- 375 wins in four years (fastest ever by a Sox manager)
You also have to remember that Tito took over right after the Grady Little debacle in 2003, and when he came on, he came on strong. It's pretty amazing how much the Sox have going for them right now. This was one of very few loose ends the Sox had hanging around heading into spring training this season, and is yet another thing that can be crossed off the list. I better go knock on some wood now quick, still it's pretty good stuff. Congrats Tito, you more then deserve it.
