Mo Vaughn, Mike Greenwell, and Bill "The Spaceman" Lee were among those inducted (SawxBlog Illustration)
The Boston Red Sox have announced their Hall of Fame class for 2008 and two of my favorite players growing up were inducted in the impressive list, and they were Mo Vaughn & Mike Greenwell. Luckily for Mo's sake his inclusion on the Mitchell Report didn't hurt him from being selected by the Sox, interesting to note though. Big Mo won an MVP award for the Sox in 1995, and on a personal note, he was the first Red Sox player I ever got an autograph from. I'll never forget that moment along with how nice and genuine he was with me and the rest of the kids around him. I don't condone his steroid use by any means, but at least he's taking it all in stride, unlike some people *cough* *cough* Roger Clemens.
And Mike Greenwell...man I LOVED watching this guy play, and he became somewhat of a hero of mine. After I took down my Boggs and Clemens posters it was Burks and Greenwell who took their place, I mean, I even went so far as to lift my left foot so I was on my toe in the batters box in honor of Greenwell. This only lasted a season, but you can obviously see the impact he had on me.
I also love that Bill Lee is one of the other players being elected. Bill Lee's like the Hunter S. Thompson of baseball, and he's a genuinely fun character who really seemed to love being part of the Red Sox as an organization. I met Bill Lee at the The Great Fenway Park Writers Series when he was promoting his book, Have Glove Will Travel, and he was one of the funniest, charismatic people I've ever met. Also the fact that he hates the Yankees more then most Red Sox fans doesn't hurt either!
The induction will take place on November 7th, and it may have to be one of the events I attend, we'll see though.
