Well, to try and lighten the mood of some of Red Sox Nation, I'm going to take a few moments to say congrats to a few Red Sox who've received awards for their efforts during the 2005 season. Jason Varitek has won two awards this year for the first time the biggest being his first Gold Glove Award, that was announced today. Another award Varitek received along with Manny Ramirez and David Ortiz was the Silver Slugger Award. This is an award given annually to the best offensive player at each position in their league. Winners are picked by major league managers & coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players. You couple these awards together with V-Tek being voted as the starting catcher in the All*Star Game and you're looking at a great season by Varitek as his first year as the "official" captain of the Boston Red Sox. Even this comes with its own silver lining as Varitek publicly commented about the Red Sox turnover today.
"It seems like we've had a lot of changes in this organization for a team that has just come off a world championship and was able to work its way back into the playoffs. Obviously, it starts from the top down. They had a huge part in getting the right people here. Yes, it was a shock. I was really surprised that [Epstein] is not coming back. Hopefully, for him, it's the best decision for himself."
David Ortiz has also received two awards this off-season and the second one was the Hank Aaron Award, which is given to the best hitter in their league. This was the second year in a row a Red Sox has won it with Manny taking home the honors last year. The highly debated MVP award has not been given out yet, and will most likely be given to A-Rod...which I disagree with, but...whatever, I think we all truly know who helps his team more.
So congrats to Tek, Manny, and Papi on having another great season in 2005, Lets hope they're all back next year, if I had a Magic 8 Ball though, I'm pretty sure it'd say something along the lines of "Outlook Grim".
