Well it's pretty safe to say that this winter has been the shortest of my life as far as being a Sox fan goes. Boston broke records for the amount of snow that fell this winter, however, I barely even noticed. It's been a Magical Mystery Tour the last few years just being a fan of sports in New England. Consider this. In the last year we've won 2 Superbowls, 1 World Series, 2 NCAA Basketball Championships (UCONN) and at least made the playoffs with our two other major sports teams. Simply awesome. I apologize for my lack of updates the last month or so, I was just caught up with the Pats and had to shift focus towards them for a bit. I'm back though and now it's on to the Sox.
The Red Sox are coming! The Red Sox are coming! Back to my original point. This winter could not have lasted longer. Winning it all was sweeter then I could of imagined and the fashion in which we did it iced the cake. It was sad to see some people leave, however, I think the key group is coming back (Trot, Tek, Ortiz, Manny, Curt, Foulke, Mueller, Millar, etc). Anyone who tries to tell me we lost a lot I say no. Pedro? Sad to see him go, however we roughly got three arms for his one money wise. Dave Roberts? Great Bench role player that we almost had to lose. Bring in 22-year-old speedy switch hitter Alejandro Machado and his 154 steals in the minors for Roberts. The Sox made moves like this all winter and they're so smart. We stay a little younger, don't lose too much, and save a lot of money. We also brought in some guys named Edgar and Clement. I think we're looking fine.
The thing that will be grabbing most of my attention this spring is the progress of Wade Miller. If this cat can get back up to speed from his rotator cuff surgery we have a better pitching staff then last year. Scary. So lets play some pepper, run some sprints, and work off the winter champagne, it's time to defend our title. Now onto the not so fun stuff...
Juice Guys
The Syringe Slammers
The whole steroid scandal is just too bad. Yeah Mark and Sammy brought people back into the game, however, over the last few years the real thing that's made baseball great is...baseball. Look at the Red Sox/Yankees Rivalry. Nothing could be better for baseball. Both talented outspoken teams with a lot of personalities from players to owners to front office to fans. It's awesome. Quick quiz, who can name the Mariners GM? My point exactly, I guarantee any fan could name Cashman and Epstein without hesitation.
This steroid crap is just that, crap. It's cheating and anyone doing it loses respect. I look fwd. to reading Jose's book even though it may not be completely non-fiction, but it does document a time in baseball. It's so obvious that the above guys juiced, and it's just sad. There's been rumors flying around about Nomie and it'd almost make sense. If ever proven true a lot of my respect for him would be out the window. I hope this gets cleaned up, I hope Barry's knee never gets better, and I hope Hank gets the credit he's never really gotten.
